We need the SAVE Act to protect election integrity

We need the SAVE Act to protect election integrity

Last week Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced the SAVE Act (‘Safeguard American 5 Voter Eligibility Act) which would ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in federal elections by requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration.

The bill would amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require proof of United States citizenship to register an individual to vote in elections for Federal office, and for other purposes.

Democrats argue that this bill is unnecessary because Federal law already requires that a voter must be a citizen to vote in the United States. Currently, the government officials who register voters and conduct federal elections aren’t allowed to require proof of citizenship. The SAVE Act would change that. It would change this loophole and require anyone registering to vote in the United States to provide proof of citizenship. It would also require states to review existing voter rolls and remove any non-citizens.

Senator Mike Lee wrote in an article for The Federalist: “Remember: every state issues driver’s licenses to noncitizens, and 19 states issue them to illegal aliens. This, coupled with the Motor Voter law and the Supreme Court’s ruling, makes it shockingly easy for aliens — legal and illegal — to vote in federal elections, even though they’re prohibited from doing so. Considering that there are now nearly 30 million noncitizens in the U.S., including about 12 million who have entered illegally since the last presidential election, we desperately need the SAVE Act.”

The SAVE Act would be a big step in the right direction for election integrity.

Secure elections are a key cornerstone for any representative government; without them, we won’t have a country,” said Rep. Roy. “Radical progressive Democrats know this and are using open border policies while also attacking election integrity laws to fundamentally remake America. That’s why I am proud to introduce the SAVE Act with Speaker Johnson and my Republican colleagues, along with the invaluable support of citizens and organizations that recognize we must end the practice of non-citizens voting in our elections.”

It’s imperative that American citizens have confidence in our voting system.
