Bill Watch: Parents Opt-in Protection Act (H.R. 4986)

What this bill does:
HR 4986 would require written consent from parents (or adult students) before schools can make students take surveys that ask for personal or family information. Each survey would need its own specific opt-in, not just a blanket approval.

Why it matters:
Parents should always have the final say when schools ask kids deeply personal questions about family, values, or beliefs. This bill strengthens parental rights and closes loopholes in current law.

Our Position:
We support H.R. 4986. Protecting student privacy and parental authority is essential in stopping schools from bypassing families with invasive surveys.

Take Action:
Call or email your U.S. Representative and tell them to support the Parents Opt-in Protection Act (H.R. 4986). Remind them: Parents, not schools, should decide when and how personal family information is shared.

Side Note: Out of the thousands of bills introduced in Congress each session, only about 2–4% ever become law. Most never make it. But each one shows us what lawmakers are pushing, and that’s why we’re watching.
